Nestled in the Sierra Foothills, Grass Valley's rich history and beautiful surroundings make it one of California's hidden gems. The town began during the gold rush, and is the home of Empire Mine, which was once one of California's richest gold mines.

Also notable is the Holbrooke Hotel, the oldest hotel that has been in continuous operation in California's Mother Lode. Jack London, Lola Montez, Emma Nevada, and Mark Twain once stayed there, as well as three US Presidents (James Garfield, Ulysses S. Grant, and Benjamin Harrison).
